Ear Measuring Instrument, for cups and raw cans (Model 126 PLUS) - ERICHSEN

Detailed Overview

The ERICHSEN Ear Measuring Instrument, Model 126 PLUS is an automated instrument for measuring the earing of deep-drawn cups and raw cans. A rotating turntable carries the cup past a pneumatically activated roller gauge head, which records the edge profile of the cup during one complete rotation.

Earing is the wavy, uneven edge that develops on deep-drawn parts as a result of the anisotropy of the sheet metal and the drawing parameters. The number and position of the ears depend on the rolling direction and texture of the material, while the height of the ears is a measure of the degree of anisotropy. Quantifying earing therefore gives a direct indication of sheet-metal formability, material quality and tool wear.

For each cup the instrument determines and documents the average earing height (He), the maximum earing height (He,max), the average cup height (H), the average earing percentage (Z%) and the number of ears. Results can be exported as PDF, TXT or CSV files for further evaluation in MS Excel. Measurement is carried out in accordance with DIN EN 1669 and ISO 11531.

With its high-resolution measuring sensor, short measuring time and clear evaluation software, the Model 126 PLUS is used throughout the aluminium and steel industry, by can manufacturers, in the automotive industry and at research institutes for repeatable quality control of deep-drawn parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the ERICHSEN Model 126 PLUS measure?
The Model 126 PLUS automatically measures the earing of deep-drawn cups and raw cans. Using a rotating turntable and a pneumatically activated roller gauge head, it records the cup edge profile during one rotation and reports the average earing height (He), maximum earing height (He,max), average cup height (H), average earing percentage (Z%) and the number of ears detected.
What is earing and why is it measured?
Earing is the wavy, uneven edge that forms on deep-drawn cups and cans because of the anisotropy of the sheet metal. The number and position of the ears relate to the rolling direction and texture of the material, while the ear height reflects the degree of anisotropy. Measuring earing therefore quantifies sheet-metal formability, material quality and tool wear.
Which cup sizes can be measured?
The instrument accepts cups and raw cans with a diameter of 15 to 44 mm and a height of 12 to 150 mm, with a 50 mm measuring stroke.
How accurate and how fast is a measurement?
The measuring sensor has a resolution of 0.0005 mm and an accuracy of ± 0.0035 mm, with an overall device accuracy of ± 0.02 mm. A complete measurement takes approximately 18 seconds.
Which standards does the Model 126 PLUS comply with?
Earing measurement with the Model 126 PLUS is performed in accordance with DIN EN 1669 and ISO 11531.
What does the instrument require to operate, and how are results exported?
It runs on a 110-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz power supply and needs dry, degreased compressed air at 2-6 bar. Measurement results can be exported as PDF, TXT or CSV files for use in MS Excel.
