Light Stability Test Chamber for Consumer Goods and Packaging

The Atlas SUNTEST XXL+ FD is a flatbed xenon arc light stability test chamber designed for consumer goods, food and beverage, and FMCG testing. Its 3000 cm² flatbed exposure area (79 × 39 cm) and tall chamber height accommodate upright 3-D specimens including bottles, containers, and finished packaging in their original form factor.

Applications

The SUNTEST XXL+ FD is used to assess light-induced degradation of ingredients, formulations, and packaging materials. Typical test objectives include determining light stability of product formulations, evaluating packaging photodegradation, and performing accelerated shelf-life testing (ASLT). Acceleration factors of 10–30 relative to real time are achievable depending on irradiance and temperature settings.

Temperature and Humidity Control

An integrated chiller (SunCool) allows the chamber air temperature to be set between 15 °C and 70 °C, enabling testing under low-temperature conditions representative of refrigerated retail or cold-chain storage. The chiller unit is detachable, converting the instrument to a standard xenon weathering chamber. Black Standard Temperature (BST) and Black Panel Temperature (BPT) are controlled independently or simultaneously with chamber air temperature (CAT). Relative humidity is controlled automatically from 20 % to 95 % RH, and a front spray system provides specimen wetting.

Irradiance Control and Light Sources

Three air-cooled 1700 W xenon arc lamps provide the light source, positioned 44 cm from the test tray. The SUNSENSIV control system regulates irradiance across selectable measurement bandwidths: 300–400 nm, 340 nm, 300–800 nm (Lux), or 420 nm. This allows the instrument to reproduce outdoor and indoor solar spectra as well as artificial retail lighting conditions.

Operation and Connectivity

The instrument uses a 10.1” XenoTouch II touchscreen interface with support for 15 languages. An access port accommodates external sensors, and the system is compatible with WXView II data acquisition software. A built-in test library covers common light stability and weathering standards including ICH Q1B, ICH Q5C, and VICH GL5.
