Fiber Series - Optomet

Product Description

The Optomet Fiber Series is a fiber-coupled laser Doppler vibrometer in Optomet’s CLASSIC Series. It measures the velocity, displacement and acceleration of a vibrating surface without contact. A short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) laser is delivered through an optical fiber to a separate measurement head, so the head can be positioned in confined spaces or challenging environments while the vibrometer unit remains remote.

The instrument operates on the Doppler principle. The measurement laser at 1550 nm is focused on the target through the fiber head, and the frequency shift of the reflected light is converted into surface motion by Optomet’s UltraDSP digital signal processing. A visible targeting beam at 510-530 nm aids alignment. The measurement laser is class 1 (below 10 mW) and the targeting beam is class 2 (below 1 mW).

The Fiber Series covers a frequency bandwidth from DC to 25 MHz and a maximum vibrational velocity of ±30 m/s, with a displacement resolution down to 50 femtometers and a 32-bit dynamic range for displacement. The number of velocity, displacement and acceleration ranges depends on the decoder configuration selected.

The fiber link uses cable lengths of 2, 5, 20 or more metres, and several measurement heads can be connected to one vibrometer through an optical switch with Ethernet-controlled channel selection, so multiple points can be measured without repositioning the unit. Six head options are available, from a Compact head with fixed working distances up to Autofocus Long-Range heads reaching 100 m.

The vibrometer unit is operated through a 3.5-inch colour screen with a 20-segment LED bargraph, touch screen, knobs with a push-button and a key switch. It provides a GBit Ethernet (RJ45) or WiFi digital output and three BNC analog outputs, and is controlled and read out with Optomet’s OptoGUI software. The unit measures 380 × 180 × 148 mm (excluding handle and lens) and weighs 8 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Fiber Series and what does it measure?
The Fiber Series is a fiber-coupled laser Doppler vibrometer in Optomet's CLASSIC Series. It measures the velocity, displacement and acceleration of a vibrating surface without contact. The measurement head is connected to the vibrometer unit by an optical fiber, so the head can be placed in confined spaces or challenging environments while the unit stays remote.
How does the Fiber Series work?
It applies the Doppler principle using a short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) laser at 1550 nm. The beam is delivered through an optical fiber to a measurement head and focused on the target, and the frequency shift of the reflected light is processed by Optomet's UltraDSP digital signal processing to derive surface motion as velocity, displacement or acceleration. A separate 510-530 nm visible beam is used for targeting.
What is the advantage of fiber coupling?
The fiber link separates the lightweight measurement head from the vibrometer unit, with cable lengths of 2, 5, 20 or more metres. The head can reach points inside enclosures, ovens or other confined spaces, and several heads can be connected to one vibrometer through an optical switch with Ethernet-controlled channel selection, allowing measurement of multiple points without repositioning.
What frequency and velocity ranges does the Fiber Series cover?
The frequency bandwidth runs from DC to 25 MHz and the maximum vibrational velocity is ±30 m/s. Displacement resolution reaches down to 50 femtometers with a 32-bit dynamic range. The number of velocity, displacement and acceleration ranges depends on the chosen decoder configuration.
What fiber head options are available?
Six heads are offered: a Compact head with fixed working distances (25 to 189 mm), a Manual Focus head, Autofocus Mid-Range and Long-Range heads, and Autofocus Pro Mid-Range and Long-Range heads with removable fiber cable. Working distances span from 15 mm up to 100 m, with minimum focus spots from about 25 µm depending on the head.
How is the Fiber Series connected and controlled?
The vibrometer unit has a 3.5-inch colour screen with a 20-segment LED bargraph and is operated by touch screen, knobs with a push-button and a key switch. It provides a GBit Ethernet (RJ45) or WiFi digital output and three BNC analog outputs. Optomet's OptoGUI software handles remote control, data acquisition and analysis over the digital connection.
